The Upper Peninsula (UP) was once referred to as a “sterile region on the shores of Lake Superior destined by soil and climate to remain forever a wilderness”. For those of us who call the UP home, we know it as one of the most beautiful places on earth. In fact, it’s one of the few places left where you can still find the perfect balance between wilderness and modern convenience.
With over 12,000 miles of rivers and streams, 4,300 inland lakes, and 100+ waterfalls you’ll never have to travel far to find water. The largest city in the UP is Marquette, home to Northern Michigan University and the Superior Dome; the fifth largest dome and largest wooden dome in the world. Marquette sits on the shores of Lake Superior, the world’s largest freshwater lake by surface area.
The UP contains 29% of the land area of Michigan, but just 3% of the total population. With a density of 19 people per square mile, you’ll find plenty of room to relax and call your own. The entire UP has only one area code, 906, which is how we came up with our name as well as the area we serve.
